Well, congratulations are in order! You have found and
accepted a new job and now have to drop the bombshell to your
present employer! It is natural for you to be experiencing
a mixture of emotions about leaving, it is never a nice thing
to have to do but it is better done sooner rather than later.
Managing
your exit well is as important as ensuring you start your
new job on the right note. Your consultant will help you through
this ordeal but here are a few points to bear in mind:
- Prior
to resignation, read your contract and be aware of
your notice period, restrictive covenants and contractual
obligations.
- Make an appointment to see the relevant person to which
you have to resign as early in the day as possible.
- When writing
your resignation letter keep it formal and brief.
- When breaking
the news to your manager and your colleagues, be
positive and professional. Emphasise that your decision
to leave is a personal one based on your wish to develop
your career elsewhere. Remember you need a reference
from this employer but regardless of this, it is always
better to leave on good terms.
- Once you
have resigned be aware you may be counter offered,
put on garden leave for the duration of your notice period
or even marched off the premises. You may well get a
cold shoulder or two but don’t take this as a personal
insult, think of it as more of a compliment in that they
are disappointed you are leaving.
